The Best Homemade Red Velvet Cake Moist, Fluffy & Full of Flavor

There’s something magical about a red velvet cake. It’s soft, rich, slightly chocolatey and has that vibrant red color that makes it instantly special. But beyond the look, a great red velvet cake is about balance. It is moist but fluffy, sweet but not overpowering with a subtle tang that keeps you coming back for another bite.

Whether you’re baking for a celebration or just want to treat yourself, this cake will win hearts (and taste buds). Let’s bake it together!

Ingredients:

Dry Ingredients

125g all-purpose flour

½ tsp salt

½ tsp baking soda

½ tsp cocoa powder

½ tsp red food coloring

200g sugar

Wet Ingredients

½ cup vegetable oil

1 egg

½ cup buttermilk (see step 1 below)

½ tsp vanilla flavoring

½ tsp vinegar

Hot Mix

½ tsp instant coffee

⅛ cup hot water

Instructions on how to Make Red Velvet Cake in 5 Easy Steps

Step 1: Make Your Buttermilk

Measure out ½ cup of milk, remove ½ tablespoon and replace it with ½ tablespoon of vinegar. Stir it and set aside for about 30 minutes. You’ll notice it thickens slightly.

Step 2: Combine the Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking soda, cocoa powder and red food coloring to avoid lumps. Add the sugar and whisk everything until fully combined. This forms the dry base of your batter.

Step 3: Mix the Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, mix the oil, egg, prepared buttermilk, vanilla flavor, and vinegar. Stir until smooth and well incorporated.

Step 4: Bring It All Together

Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix gently until everything is just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 5: Add the Hot Coffee Mixture

Dissolve the coffee in the hot water and pour it into the batter. Mix until smooth and evenly blended.

Baking Time

Pour the batter into a lined cake pan and bake at 160°C (320°F) for 40 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let it cool completely before slicing or frosting.

And there you have your rich, velvety and utterly delicious red velvet cake made right at home. It’s perfect on its own or with your favorite frosting or topping.
